Every month the FSO receives an extract from the database listing all newly registered road vehicles in Switzerland for the current year up until the end of the previous month.
The monthly figures are always provisional. Late registrations for previous months are probable.
Every month the data for all previous months is overwritten.
The commune of residence is defined by the postal code and postal locality in the owner's address.

Canton

The canton is defined by the owner's address and not by the registration plate.

Vehicle group / type

The different vehicle types are defined in the Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles (RVTRO) SR 741.41, art. 6 to 28 (in German).
